Ancient Animals Wiki

After climate change, rising sea levels, and an asteroid strike brought the Triassic period to an end, the Jurassic period started. During this time, life in the Mesozoic Era was starting to get progressively more notable. Many of the dinosaurs started to grow in size and become more unique, resulting in many new interesting groups of dinosaurs such as allosaurs, stegosaurs, and sauropods. In fact, a large group of smaller, feathery theropod dinosaurs would evolve into birds; however, since they were restricted to living in the trees and gliding around the forests, the pterosaurs remained as the dominant flying vertebrates of the period. Meanwhile, in the oceans, mollusks like the ammonites and the belemnites were extremely common; however, they were far from dominating the waters like they did in the Ordovician, as marine reptiles like the ichthyosaurs and the plesiosaurs were the sole rulers of the seas. In fact, even the mammals became more common. However, they would remain small for the rest of the Mesozoic, as the dinosaurs had ruled the Earth. Soon, climate change, volcanic activity, and fireball strikes would impact the Earth, driving many genera to extinction and giving rise to the Cretaceous.
